Washington would like to keep Charles Leno around

In May, the Washington Football Team signed Charles Leno , a veteran left tackle. This was after the Chicago Bears unexpectedly released Leno in a cost-cutting move. Leno was released by the Bears right after the NFL draft. Washington immediately brought Leno in for a visit , before signing him a few days later.

Washington had just taken Texas offensive lineman Sam Cosmi during the draft , and released former draft pick GeronChristian days after. This meant that Cosmi and Leno would become Washington’s offensive tackles in 2021..

Leno signed a one year contract and will be released in March. He has already played one season in Washington. Washington will have to agree that Leno will remain its left tackle in the future, if they are right.

According to John Keim of ESPN, Washington has reached out to Leno’s representatives about re-signing the veteran left tackle.

Leno started every Washington game at left tackle. He’s been a good player. Washington would be wise to make a deal soon with Leno.

This offensive line played well before it was decimated by injuries. Leno was a key reason the group has performed well even after injuries.

Leno at 30, Leno may still have many productive seasons ahead. He has been granted an extension and it is not going to cost him too much. Washington also has ample cap space in the offseason.

Right-guard Brandon Scherff will be a free agent following the season. Scherff can negotiate with anyone after he has been issued two franchise tags. Washington could make an offer to Scherff. Although he’s still an excellent player, he is missing a lot of time.

Washington’s top priorities for the offseason are to sign wide receiver Terry McLaurin to an extension that is lucrative and to find a long-term solution at quarterback.

Washington should not let Leno get in the way of his priorities. He is a solid player in an important position.
