Jahlani Tvai quickly found a new and more predictable home in the NFL. The New England Patriots signed the third-year linebacker to the practice squad after he was waived by Detroit Lions earlier in the week.
It’s a predictable development. The Lions regime, which included Matt Patricia, the Patriots’ head coach, drafted Tavai in the second round 2019 NFL draft. Tavai struggled greatly in Detroit’s passive defense scheme, despite some highlights as a rookie.
Tavai gained a lot of weight in this offseason to try and get faster after the Patricia regime increased his weight to 270 lbs. Although the quickness improved, Tavai’s lack of space instincts and play processing speed meant that he had to be cut.
He was not claimed on waivers.
