Gone are the days when most Ghanaian graduates complain of poverty after school and as a result gave birth to the infamous “Unemployed Graduate Association of Ghana” who used to give the government a lot of pressure to find them jobs.
But someway somehow, the above-mentioned association has been reduced to nothingness kind courtesy the influx of sports betting in Ghana especially Betway, BetPawa, Soccabet among others. This is because with just GH¢1, a lucky punter can win hundreds or thousands of cedis which cometh with no or less stress.
Regardless of the “good” fortune in sports betting, reliable information available to ghbase.com has it that management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has banned gambling and betting among the students on campus with one year rustication as a sanction for any student who will be caught in the act.
Per our checks, the decision was arrived at after an academic board meeting held last Thursday, May 2 to deliberate on several issues. The decision to forbid students from engaging in such act is an attempt to restrict students from sports betting and regularize betting syndicates.
Our information further revealed that, the University or any of its organs henceforth shall not accept any donation or sponsorship from any betting company for any program on campus.
The University Information Technology Service (UITS) has hence been instructed to block all betting websites from the University’s WIFI accessible to all students. According to the authorities of the nation’s premier technology institution, gambling has diverted attention of the students from hard work and outmost academic performance so taking this step will curb such challenges.
Nonetheless, we do hope that this administrative directive won’t incur the displeasure of the students of KNUST to stage another demonstration.
